Carpenter Bees

USDA Cooperative ExtensionWhat are Carpenter Bees?

Carpenter bees look similar to bumble bees, but the upper part of their abdomen is bare and shiny black. Bumble bees have a hairy abdomen with at least some yellow markings.

Despite looking similar, nesting habits are different from bumble bees. Carpenter bees tunnel into wood to lay their eggs. Unpainted and weathered softwoods are preferred. They tend to nest in redwood, cedar, cypress and pine. Painted or pressure-treated wood is much less likely to be attacked. Nesting sites are frequently located in eaves, window trim, facia boards, siding, wooden shakes, decks, or outdoor furniture. Carpenter bees survive winter as adults in wood within abandoned nest tunnels. Female carpenter bees may create more tunnels for egg laying, or enlarge and reuse old ones. The damage to wood which has been utilized year after year may become considerable.
